A Couple More Strange Vintage Ads

A Four Roses Whiskey ad...where are they going with that horse? And why does the caption state "He's keeping a date made 20 years ago"?

You mean Pabst used to be sophisticated? This ad is terrible...awful...and a whole lot more terrible!

It's amazing how blatantly racist they could be back then in ads. There is a big antique place near me, and years ago they had a huge stash of OLD Bull Durham cigarette ads, and apparantley their target audience was dirt poor African Americans in the south. I'm talkin big fat mammies, kids eatin' watermelon, pigs on the front porch, Redd Foxx looking old men eatin' chicken. Worst of all, their caption was "It shure am some sweet tastin'." I wish I had bought the whole pile. It was really unbelievably from another time.

But not really that long ago... and it was everywhere. If you ever get the chance, pick up a copy of Ian Flemming's Live and Let Die. See if you don't feel a little uncomfortable with their description of the main villain and a larger exposition about "black society." What makes it painful is that he's trying so hard to sound progressive.

Lee-
Oh...GOD...I didn't even notice the buckets til you pointed them out! GROSS!

Scurvy-
Yeah I found a bunch like this but didn't feel the need to put them all up...this ONE kind of made the point. They are sick but fascinating all at the same time. Very interesting collector's pieces.

SCARY. I've never actually read Ian Flemming but I have that book on my shelves somewhere. I'll have to pickl it up...maybe when I get around to reading the other James Bond books.

Ahhh racsim, what a great way to sell things!

That was sarcasm. But I think that was pretty obvious...at least I hope so.

I am so going to stick some hack GOP journalist's head on that bellboy's body!

The original Ian Flemming James Bond book were really great. You should check them out when you get a chance. And yes, they are all filled with the blatant racism of the era.
