Movie Geek Meme

1) Favorite quote from a filmmaker
"Normal love isn't interesting. I assure you that it's incredibly boring." -Roman polanski

2) A good movie from a bad director
Boogie Nights. God Magnolia was bad the writing was so egotistical! But I sure did love Boogie Nights.

3) Favorite Laurence Olivier performance
Sleuth for sure.

4) Describe a famous location from a movie that you have visited
I've been to Mount Rushmore...there's a scene in North by Northwest that takes place at Mount Rushmore. Does that count even if it is pretty obvious they filmed the Mount Rushmore scenes on a sound stage?

5) Carlo Ponti or Dino De Laurentiis (Producer)?
I've got to say Dino De Laurentiis for bringing us movies like Barbarella, Army of Darkness, Flash Gordon and Conan!

6) Best movie about baseball
Field of Dreams...I don't like Baseball but it's is a pretty darn good movie. I never think I like it that much then I just get caught up watching it.

7) Favorite Barbara Stanwyck performance
Hmmmm...I don't think I've seen her in a movie yet.

8) Fast Times at Ridgemont High or Dazed and Confused?
Gosh...neither I have to say.

9) What was the last movie you saw, and why?
Female Trouble, I've had it on tape for awhile but just finally got around to watching it! I wish Divine were still alive so I could marry her! So beautiful!

10) Whether or not you have actually procreated or not, is there a movie you can think of that seriously affected the way you think about having kids of your own?I always love the kids in late John Waters films like Cry-Baby and Dirty Shame. Those delinquent Rickett children in Cry-Baby are great enough to make me wish i had little delinquents of my own. And as twisted as this sounds I would love to have a daughter as cute and comfortable in her own shoes as Clarice AKA Ursula Udders.

11) Favorite Katharine Hepburn performance
The Philadelphia Story, it's really the only time I've liked Hepburn in a movie. I just never see her acting, exactly, she's always Katherine Hepburn no matter what she's playing.

12) A bad movie from a good director
The Osterman Weekend directed by Sam Peckinpah, he's a terrific director whose made some of may favorite movies like Straw Dogs and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia but The Osterman Weekend is just boring.

13) Salo: The 120 Days of Sodom-- yes or no?
Maybe...I've never seen a Pasolini movie.

14) Ben Hecht or Billy Wilder (Screenwriter)?
Ben Hecht the man wrote some of the greatest Hitchcock movies so I have to go with him!

15) Name the film festival you’d most want to attend, or your favorite festival that you actually have attended
I saw Josh Becker's Running Time starring Bruce Campbell at the Chicago International Film Festival many years ago. Becker was there and did a Q&A afterward, I actually asked a question of the man...ooooooh. I'd love to go to Cannes though...seems pretty cool.

16) Head or 200 Motels?
Oh god Head all the way! It's so fucking weird! I always loved The Monkees but this literally is The Monkees on acid. Great soundtrack!

17) Favorite cameo appearance
Has to John Waters in Hairspray as the psychologist trying to convince Penny she is wrong for liking black boys with his hypno-wheel. Hilarious!

18) Favorite Rosalind Russell performance
I am a bad movie geek I haven't seen a Rosiland Russell film either.

19) What movie, either currently available on DVD or not, has never received the splashy collector’s edition treatment you think it deserves? What would such an edition include?
Well Ken Russell's The Devils has yet to come out on DVD in this country though I heard that it might come out later this year. As far as extras I'd love to see commentary, a documentary on the making of the film and it's problems with the censors as well as the footage that was cut from the movie.

20) Name a performance that everyone needs to be reminded of, for whatever reason
Let me take this opportunity to shower a bit of attention in the direction of one of my adopt-an-actor adoptees:

In the movie Blind Fury Rutger Hauer plays a soldier left for dead in the jungles of Vietnam. Rescued by a small tribe he is nursed back to health but loses sight. As he regains his strength the tribe teaches him martial arts and even make him a seeing eye cane with a secret sword inside. He eventually returns to the US and decides to look up an old nam budy played by Terry O'Quinn, only to discover he's in some trouble with really bad people (one of the bad dudes is played by Nick Cassavetes so you know he's baaaaaad!) and now must use his martial arts skill to get his buddy and his buddies son out of a jam. Hauer is terrific in this film! You'd almost believe he's really blind and his faux martial arts skills are great! It's an awesome performance.

Click here to watch a scene from the movie. It starts slow but after about 30 seconds you get some blind swordsman action!

21) Louis B. Mayer or Harry Cohn (Studio Head)?
Louis B. Mayer of course.

22) Favorite John Wayne performance
The Searchers is his best performance but my favorite Wayne movie is either 3 Godfathers or She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.

23) Naked Lunch or Barton Fink?
Haven't seen either actually.

24) Your Ray Harryhausen movie of choice
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad! What a great movie! Not only is John Phillip Law Sinbad and Caroline Munro is his too sexy badly accented companion but there is a multi-armed statue fight. AWESOME!!

25) Is there a movie you can think of that you feel like the world would be better off without, one that should have never been made?
Crash. This is a movie for people who are so cut off from the real problems of society they think it's a revelation. I know many people who claimed to be "deeply" effected by the "message" of this movie but have done nothing to change or effect the lives or behaviors of others in a positive way.

24) Favorite Dub Taylor performance
After checking IMDB I find I am way more familiar with his TV stuff like his appearance on The Monkees or The Partridge Family or Andy Griffith. There was a Dub Taylor Show?

25) If you had the choice of seeing three final movies, to go with your three last meals, before shuffling off this mortal coil, what would they be?
Oh fuck! What a question!
Cleopatra (1963)
Big Trouble in Little China
Russ Meyer's Super Vixens

26) And what movie theater would you choose to see them in?
A nice sized theater with comfortable seating with only a few people of my choosing.

I'm not gonna tag anyone but if you want to give this meme a try go for it!

Guess That Movie Quote: Week 16

It's a bit early but I won't be home tomorrow so...

Here are the rules:
If you know or think you know the source of the movie quote please leave your guess in the comments section. As people guess the source of the quote I will grey it out and give them credit (using google to find the answers will disqualify you), the person who has the most correct guesses each week will get a fun movie genius award to decorate their blog. Any person who wins 5 weeks (consecutive or non-consecutive) will earn a Movie Master award and must then refrain from guessing for 5 weeks but a master can email quote suggestions for the game.

Ready, Set, Guess!

I'm doing another theme this week all of the quotes come from the english translations of foriegn films. FUN!

1. "Do you know how Florentine women ensure their husbands come home? Every morning they slip him a slow poison, and every evening the antidote. That way, when the husband spends the night away, he has a very bad night." Mob I had a feeling you'd get this one :)

2. "Me? I've had so many names. Old names that only the wind and the trees can pronounce. I am the mountain, the forest and the earth. I am... I am a faun. Your most humble servant, Your Highness." J.D.

3. "He looks determined... without being ruthless. There's something heroic about him. He doesn't look like a killer. He comes across so calm... acts like he has a dream... eyes full of passion." Richo

4. "I was orphaned at a young age and was never given a name. People simply called me Nameless. With no family name to live up to, I devoted myself to the sword. I spent ten years perfecting unique skills as a swordsman. The King of Qin has summoned me to court, for what I have accomplished has astonished the kingdom." J.D.

5. "Hide a stone among stones and a man among men."

6. "I would rather be a ghost drifting by your side as a condemned soul than enter heaven without you... because of your love, I will never be a lonely spirit." J.D.

7. "General Von Greim, I appoint you supreme commander of the Luftwaffe. I hereby promote you to General-Fieldmarshall. A big responsibility rests on your shoulders. You have to rebuild the Luftwaffe from scratch. Many mistakes have been made. Be ruthless. Life doesn't forgive weakness. This so-called humanity is religious drivel. Compassion is an eternal sin. To feel compassion for the weak is a betrayal of nature. The strong can only triumph if the weak are exterminated. Being loyal to this law, I've never had compassion. I've always been ruthless when faced with internal opposition from other races. That's the only way to deal with it."

8. "They begin again. The man doesn't die, nor does he go mad. He suffers. They continue."

9. "You're wearing that hat? After all the magic I used to make your dress pretty?" J.D.

10. "Bad luck isn't brought by broken mirrors, but by broken minds."

**Update**
Okay I guess the quotes were a bit hard this week but thanks to those who did play and a super congrats to J.D. who used his foriegn film expertise to become this week's winner!

Thanks to everyone for playing and come back next Monday for another round of quiz fun! Oh and I'll post the answers in the comments section.

Guess That Movie Quote: Week 15

Here are the rules:
If you know or think you know the source of the movie quote please leave your guess in the comments section. As people guess the source of the quote I will grey it out and give them credit (using google to find the answers will disqualify you), the person who has the most correct guesses each week will get a fun movie genius award to decorate their blog. Any person who wins 5 weeks (consecutive or non-consecutive) will earn a Movie Master award and must then refrain from guessing for 5 weeks but a master can email quote suggestions for the game.

Now on to the guessing!

1. "I'm fine... I'm fine... I don't think so. We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound fine?" Smallerdemon

2. "Y'know, this was supposed to be my weekend off, but noooo. You got me out here draggin' your heavy ass through the burnin' desert with your dreadlocks stickin' out the back of my parachute. You gotta come down here with an attitude, actin' all big and bad... and what the hell is that smell? I could've been at a barbecue! But I ain't mad." Scurvy

3. "I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter tied to this fucking couch!" MC

7. "For me, stealing's always been a lot like sex. Two people who want the same thing: they get in a room, they talk about it. They start to plan. It's kind of like flirting. It's kind of like... foreplay, 'cause the more they talk about it, the wetter they get. The only difference is, I can fuck someone I've just met. But to steal? I need to know someone like I know myself." Johnny B

So you, with that impressive résumé and the big speech about your so-called work ethic- I, um- I thought you would be different. I said to myself, go ahead. Take a chance. Hire the smart, fat girl. I had hope. My God. I live on it. Anyway, you ended up disappointing me more than, um- more than any of the other silly girls." J.D.

9. "It lies to her. It tells her things only a child can understand. It's been using her to restrain the others. To her, it simply is another child. To us, it is The Beast."

Another terrible remake in the works?

Yahoo News is reporting that Warner Bros. plans to remake the Bruce Lee classic Enter the Dragon. The remake will be called Awaken the Dragon and will be written and directed by Kurt Sutter the producer of The Shield TV series. The Warner Bros. publicist Laura Kim said the movie will tell the story of an FBI agent who investigates a Shaolin monk and underground kung fu fight clubs. There has been no comment on casting or when they plan to start filming.

Why god why? Why mess with a great, classic piece of film?

Overlooked Movies: Red Sonja

"It's the worst film I have ever made. Now, when my kids get out of line, they're sent to their room and forced to watch Red Sonja ten times. I never have too much trouble with them." ~Arnold Schwarzenegger

The tyrant Gedren seeks the total power in a world of barbarism. She raids the city Hablac and kills the keeper of a talisman that gives her great power. Red Sonja, sister of the keeper, sets out with her magic sword to overthrow Gedren. The talisman's master Kalidor follows to protect her. Of course they fall in love - however Red Sonja's power bases on the oath to never give herself to any man...

Tagline:
A woman and a warrior that became a legend.

Fun Trivia:
It is commonly believed that Robert E. Howard created the character of Red Sonja in one of his Conan short stories. In reality, he created a character with a similar name (Red Sonya) that appeared in a minor role in a non-fantasy work of historical fiction. "Red Sonja", the character popularized by the 1985 movie, actually first appeared in a Conan comic book written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was originally to have a cameo as Conan in this film but as the film makers realized how weak the script was his part grew until he appeared in virtually all of the film. Ultimately the way the role was written became so different than Conan they were forced to rename his character.

The original theatrical trailer of this movie contains cutting room-floor footage of scenes glimpsed only briefly in the film's prologue: Sonja, left to perish in her burning home, is saved by her dying brother Barlok; Gedren, prior to her disfigurement, addresses her soldiers and slaves.

The name of Ronald Lacey's character, "Ikol," spelled backwards is "Loki." Loki, in Nordic mythology, was the God of Evil and Corruption, infamous for being a jealousy-prone troublemaker.

In Conan the Barbarian, Sandahl Bergman played Valeria, a thief and the love of Conan’s life. Bergman was offered the role of Red Sonja, but turned it down afraid of typecasting, choosing instead to play the villainous Queen Gedren. It took Dino De Laurentiis almost a year to find an actress "Amazonian" enough to play the title character; in fact, he was still looking eight weeks before the production was due to start, when he saw Brigitte Nielsen on the cover of a fashion magazine. The 21-year-old native of Helsingør, Denmark, who was in Milan on a modeling job, soon found herself on a plane heading for Rome and a successful screen test.

Comic book writer and artist Wendy Pini, who frequently performed as Red Sonja at conventions and other venues, was considered for the role.

Fun Quotes:
Red Sonja: Falkon, may I give you a word of advice? Put him over your knee and beat some manners into him.

Brytag: I will tell the future in your entrails, Red Woman!
Red Sonja: I know my future. You have none.

Red Sonja: No man may have me, unless he's beaten me in a fair fight.
Kalidor: So, the only man that can have you, is one who's trying to kill you. That's logic.
Kalidor: If you yield only to a conqueror, then prepared to be conquered... Little Sonja...
Red Sonja: Don't be a fool, I don't want to kill you.
Kalidor: Try it.

More Pictures From Wizard World!

More fun pictures from my exciting weekend at Wizard World Chicago 2007!

I belive this is Cobra Commander

Here I am hard at work sketching away!

Scarecrow from Batman Begins

Slave girl Princess Leia holding a picture I drew of slave girl Leia

SamuraiFrog in front of a TARDIS! He's holding a Sonic Screwdriver toy as well!

This t-shirt is great! It's based on one of those Chick Tracts. You know those religious comic books that tell you, your going to hell. "Galactus is coming" hilarious!

Superman, General Zod and Batman

This gentleman was dressed as the character from his own comic...unfortunately I never got the name of it! Very cool costume however!

Harvey Birdman and his boss Phil Ken Sebben

You may have noticed in some of the pictures a tall banner at the table next to mine. That table belonged to a plucky young artist named Spike who does a great web comic called Templar, Arizona. The story that takes place in a bizarly wonderful made up Arizonan town that has a giant statue of Jimmy Carter in a toga, holding a bowl of peanuts, a restaurant that serves guinea pigs called The Sassy Cavy and a cast of wonderful characters you just can't get out of your head.
Spike recently released her first graphic novel collection of the web comic and was selling it at the convention. I picked up a copy read it and fell in love! Anyone who likes comics should check it out, it really is great and this girl deserves a contract with one of the major comic publishers.

Click here to start reading or below to purchase a copy of the first collection for yourself. Seriously you need to check this out.

And believe it or not there are still more pictures to come! I will post the rest tomorrow!
