Movie of the Week: Candy
Christian Marquand's CANDY follows the adventures of a gorgeous, naive young woman (Ewa Aulin) who sets off into the world on a journey of sexual discovery. Along her personal yellow brick road, she encounters a wacked-out poet (Richard Burton), an enigmatic Mexican gardener (Ringo Starr), an evil general (Walter Matthau), a lascivious guru (Marlon Brando), and a wily surgeon (James Coburn), all of whom want their own personal taste of Candy. Can she fend them off in time to save her own soul?
With a script by Buck Henry (THE GRADUATE) based on the novel by Terry Southern (DR. STRANGELOVE), CANDY is a wacky send-up of Voltaire's CANDIDE and one of the zaniest sexcapades ever captured on film. Marquand's erotic comedy also features a rock-fueled 1960s soundtrack that includes the Byrds and Steppenwolf.
Taglines: Good Grief, It's Candy!
She's only faithful to the book.
Fun Trivia:
Buck Henry the film's writer has a cameo as the strait-jacketed man in the elevator who becomes agitated at mention of Dr. Krankheit.
This was Ringo Starr's first appearance in a non Beatles movie...as a mexican gardener no less.
Some Edited Clips: You owe it to yourself to watch it.
Fun Quotes:
T.M. Christian: Now look you people! This isn't some godforsaken border town where you can just, uh, go about as you please and, and bother innocent people and do... do... do... Mexican things!
General R.A. Smight: You can't give blood to a member of your own family.
Jack Christian: Why can't I?
General R.A. Smight: Why can't you? Why can't you?
Jack Christian: That was my question, yes.
General R.A. Smight: Well because that's, that's... That's incest.
MacPhisto: The poem that I just recited to you was composed in a hospital in Burma as I lay close to death, having been savagely beaten by a...a horde of outraged Belgian tourists.

Movie of the Week: Faster Pussycat Kill, Kill!
"The best movie ever made, and possibly better than any movie that will ever be made."- John WatersThree strippers seeking thrills encounter a young couple in the desert. After dispatching the boyfriend, they take the girl hostage and begin scheming on a crippled old man living with his two sons in the desert, reputedly hiding a tidy sum of cash. They become houseguests of the old man and try and seduce the sons in an attempt to locate the money, not realizing that the old man has a few sinister intentions of his own.
Taglines:
"Superwomen! Belted, buckled and booted!"
"Russ Meyer's ode to the violence in women"
"Go-Go For a Wild Ride With the ACTION GIRLS!"
Fun Trivia:
Lead actress Tura Satana, legally owns her likeness and image. So, whenever Russ Meyer wanted to change the artwork or re-release the project, he had to get her permission and sometimes pay her all over again.
After Varla cuts the fence and gets back into her car, look at the rear side window. Crew member with hat is briefly visible in the reflection.
Fun Quotes:
The Old Man: You girls a bunch of nudists or are you just short of clothes?
Billie: I'm of legal age for whiskey, voting and loving. Now the next election is two years away, and my love life ain't getting much better, so how about some of that one-hundred-percent!
Tommy: What's your point?
Varla: It's of no return, and you've reached it!
The Old Man: Women! They let 'em vote, smoke and drive - even put 'em in pants! And what happens? A Democrat for president!
Narrator: Ladies and gentlemen - welcome to violence!
Tura Satana on the lost art of burlesque dancing:
"When I was dancing burlesque was an art - classy and elegant and requiring talent. I got out of it when it started to become raunchy and lost the art. Now they call it nude dancing, but its plain old pornography as far as I'm concerned. They do things on stage that I wouldn't have even thought of doing."

The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer
Yes! after years of hoping someone would have the guts to rerun the short lived comedy The Secret Life of Desmond Pfeiffer I finally got to see an episode on You Tube.
Here's a short description for those who may not be familar:
Desmond Pfeiffer (the P is pronounced) was a black British gentleman who was run out of England after being accused of cheating at cards. He takes a job as butler to a perpetually horny Abraham Lincoln in the White House during the Civil War.
How can you not love a show with a description like that...and after seeing it...it's almost like an american version of Blackadder. Very, very funny! Check it out.

What's With Elijah Wood?
Here are some pictures of Elijah Wood from Cannes and I just have to say he's starting to look a bit like Gollum from Lord of the Rings. It's not just just his appearance either (though that doesn't really help any) it's that damn camera, he takes it everywhere. he has an apparent obsession with the device almost like unto Gollum for the one ring. It's fine to want a memento of your experiences but he seems to be doing nothing but hiding behind the little metal box. And Elijah Wood as Iggy Pop? I just don't see it.

Cemetery Man on DVD at Last!
Great news for all us horror film fans, Cememtery Man will finally be released on DVD Tuesday June 13th.
Here's some info from the official Anchor Bay press release:
Great horror films are like zombies – the best ones always come back!
On Tuesday, June 13th, Anchor Bay Entertainment, an IDT Entertainment company, will release the eagerly-awaited U.S. DVD premiere of Cemetery Man , one of the most requested horror titles of the last decade. Revered by consumers and industry critics alike for releasing classic and cult horror films, Anchor Bay continues that tradition for Cemetery Man (aka Dellamorte Dellamore ) with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, and resurrected with a SRP of $19.98.
Directed by Michele Soavi, Cemetery Man stars Rupert Everett ( My Best Friend's Wedding and the voice of Prince Charming in Shrek 2 ) as Francesco Dellamore, a cemetery caretaker who finds that his seemingly dead-end job has recently become a little harder. Along with his sidekick Gnaghi (Francois Hadji-Lazaro), Francesco spends his days interning corpses and his nights killing “returners” – those who have risen from their grave seven days after burial. Life changes for Francesco when he falls for a beautiful, mysterious widow (Anna Falchi). When fate intervenes, Francesco must choose between Love Eternal and the Living Dead…
Ever since its release in 1994, Cemetery Man has shocked and tickled with its unique balance of the macabre and the comical. Anchor Bay Entertainment dug deep to find bonus features worthy of the film's reputation, including:
Widescreen Presentation (1.66:1), enhanced for 16x9 TVs
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound
Death is Beautiful: The Making of Cemetery Man featuring all-new cast and crew interviews including director Michele Soavi, star Anna Falchi and more
Michele Soavi Bio
Trailers
Very, very exciting!

The Return of Movie of the Week
Yes after a bit of a break I've decided to start posting movies of the week again and in honor of the upcomming Cememtery Man DVD release on June 12th I've decided to repost my original entry on the movie. This week's movie of the week is Cemetery Man (aka Dellamorte Dellamore)
This Italian film, titled “Dellamorte, Dellamore”, is properly translated as ‘of death, of love’. Rupert Everett stars as Francesco Dellamorte, a cemetery caretaker who must destroy the dead as they rise from their graves with his trusty assistant Gnaghi. Utilizing dark humor and Italian surrealism, this film touches upon the philosophical meanings of love, death, and life. The former apprentice to master filmmaker Dario Argento, develops his own style as well as a cult following with this film.
Fun Facts:
Many sources incorrectly state that this film is derived from Tiziano Sclavi's comics featuring the hero Dylan Dog; it is in fact an adaptation of a Schlavi Novel (also called Dellamore Dellamore) that does not contain the Dylan Dog character. Years earlier, however, Schlavi did base his Dylan Dog drawings on the facial features of Rupert Everett which is probably how the confusion began. An American Dylan Dog movie was developed a few years after the release of this movie, but never came to fruition
Gnaghi (Francios Hadji-Lazaro) is also a French rock musician. He also stared in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "City of Lost Children". Check it out.
An American company was willing to fund and distribute the movie if Matt Dylan was cast as Francesco. Thank god, Soavi said no.Fun Quotes:
"At a certain point in your life you realize you know more dead people than living."
"I'd give my life to be dead."
It's good stuff you must see,

Dude is it just me or does anyone else out there think the new pope is EVIL! I mean look at the dark circles round his eyes and his pointy demeon ears. Actually now that I think about it he kind of looks like Lindsay Lohan did at the Just My Luck Premiere. Freaky man, freaky.
