Barbarella Saved!

Well at least it has a fighting chance now...

From Dark Horizons:

Robert Rodriguez has signed on to direct Universal's new adaptation of the classic sci-fi comic book "Barbarella." Immortalized in the famous campy 1968 movie starring Jane Fonda, plans are to rush the new film out in time for a release sometime next year - coinciding with the original's 40th anniversary.

"Barbarella" tells the story of a female mercenary who roams across the universe of a distant future, undertaking missions that require physical fearlessness, ingenuity and sensuality.

Scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade ("Casino Royale") are penning a completely new adventure for the galactic heroinne.

Here's hoping this means that Kate Beckinsale is out and Rose McGowan is in as our lovely lead Barbarella!

I'm sorry Dr. Zaius but she just annoys me...not as much as some but still it's enough!

Kate Beckinsale was great back when she was an actress. How you go from Cold Comfort Farm as an ingenue to breast implants and Click as an adult is a sad state of affairs.

Rose McGowan really impressed me in Grindhouse. I don't know if she can ever do an A-movie, but would be terrific for any kind of movie involving aliens, zombies and gratuitous nudity, like Barbarella.

Good point she did seem to have a promising career then she became Miss Creepy Stretchmarks! Seriously those breast implant stretchmarks creep me out! And what was with her Pottsylvanian accent in Van Helsing!

Rose McGowan, zombies and gratuitous nudity. Those words should always be used together in the same sentence.

This is great. I hope Barbarella hair becomes fashionable. It's sexy. Also you must have an ass to play Barbarella and Kate Beckinsale has no ass.

Looking at this gallery, I can't see either actress matching the comic exactly... Although I can't say I've solved the question of who I do see. I know I'm tired of Kate Beckinsale's bland mug in every other geeky movie, so if those are my only choices, I'm with you on Rose.

Awesome! I’m glad Rodriguez is now on board to direct “Barbarella.” He has a knack for creating iconic images—Salma in From Dusk Till Dawn, Rose in Planet Terror, and Jessica in Sin City. I just hope he doesn’t screw this up. He’s a good director, but, sometimes, his movies are all over the place.

I think Rose would made a great Barbarella. How about Angelina Jolie? Or maybe a lesser-known actress—Yancy Butler (Witchblade)? Kristanna Loken (Painkiller Jane)?

Yes! Barbarella hair! The best style in the galaxy!

Yes the comic has a bit of a different tone to it...it's still fun and sexy but it's more serious. I highly reccomend it if anyone is looking for a good read.

Yes Rodriguez really has a knack for creating iconic images, I always look forward to his movies. That said your right his movies even if enjoyable have been a bit uneven. I love the second half of From Dusk Til Dawn (his half) but say The Faculty while an enjoyable movie isn't nearly as good.

Interesting actress suggestions...I myself have been trying to think of someone I thought (in my wildest dreams) would be great in the role. I still haven't come up with the perfect actress yet. As long as it's not as boring as Kate Beckinsale I'll be thrilled.
